Handshakes are common and may be prolonged. Greet elders first. "Jambo" is for tourists; locals say "Habari" or "Mambo". Take time for greetings - rushing is rude.

Wash hands before eating. Many eat with their right hand. Accept food when offered. Ugali (maize porridge) is a staple. Meals are social occasions.
