👋 Greetings

Handshakes are common and may be prolonged. Greet elders first. "Jambo" is for tourists; locals say "Habari" or "Mambo". Take time for greetings - rushing is rude.

🍽️ Dining

Wash hands before eating. Many eat with their right hand. Accept food when offered. Ugali (maize porridge) is a staple. Meals are social occasions.

👔 Dress Code

Modest dress is appreciated, especially in Zanzibar (Muslim majority). Cover shoulders and knees. Safari clothing should be neutral colors. Remove shoes when entering homes.

🚫 Things to Avoid

  • Refusing hospitality
  • Using left hand for eating or greetings
  • Photographing people without permission
  • Disrespecting elders
  • Public displays of affection in Zanzibar
  • Pointing with your finger
