👋 Greetings

A handshake is standard. Close friends may kiss on both cheeks. Use honorifics like "Bey" (Mr.) and "Hanım" (Ms.) after first names as a sign of respect.

🍽️ Dining

Turkish hospitality is legendary - refusing food or drink may offend. Tea (çay) is offered constantly. Meals are social occasions. Remove shoes before entering homes.

👔 Dress Code

Modest dress is appreciated, especially at mosques. Women should cover heads, shoulders and knees at mosques. Casual is fine elsewhere, but Turks dress neatly.

🚫 Things to Avoid

  • Criticizing Atatürk or Turkish nationalism
  • Wearing shoes in mosques or homes
  • Pointing the sole of your foot at someone
  • Public displays of affection in conservative areas
  • Discussing Armenian or Kurdish issues casually
